Keep your home warm (and safe) this fall

Many Americans list fall as their favorite season, but it also presents a number of unique fire hazards. So as temperatures – and leaves – start dropping, it’s good to remember a few safety tips to help your family enjoy autumn. We have autumn advice even those in warmer climates can use!

Service your furnace
Call your heating and cooling company to check your furnace. An expert inspection will assure everything is in working order and that there are no leaks.

Use fireplaces safely
Keep fire in its proper place by using a screen to keep sparks from flying out of the fireplace. Never leave a burning fire unattended, and make sure it’s completely out before going to bed.

Use caution with space heaters
A space heater can be an efficient way to warm a chilly room, but read the instructions on the unit before you use it. If your space heater requires venting, make sure it’s vented to the outdoors, and always allow at least three feet of empty area around space heaters. Never use your stove or oven to heat your home; only use space heaters that are approved for this purpose.

Reconsider leaf burning
While many communities permit leaf-burning, the Environmental Protection Agency says burning leaves produces dangerous, cancer-causing chemicals. So you may want to think about another means of leaf disposal. If you do decide to burn leaves, wear a protective mask, keep the fire far away from your house and other structures, and check the weather before starting to burn leaves — you don’t want to burn in windy conditions.

Exercise candle caution
Candles and other decorations that use an open flame (think jack-o’-lanterns) are a great way to set a mood, but they can also cause fires. According to the National Candle Association, almost 10,000 home fires start with improper candle use. Never leave candles or other festive flames burning if you go out or go to sleep, and keep your candles away from pets and kids.
