Fall family activities

The heat of summer is slowly coming to an end and the crisp temps of fall are on their way. Here are four family activities to enjoy with your loved ones.

Visit your local farmer's market or farm stand

Even though fall is synonymous with apples and pumpkins, there is a wide variety of crops that are harvested in the fall depending on where you live. Stop by your local farmer’s market, farms or orchards to grab the freshest sweet potatoes, onions, corn, garlic, beets or lettuce. There may even be farm and orchard tours, “you pick” produce events, games, petting zoos, corn mazes, haunted houses or hayrack rides.

Host a fall-themed party

Check out your local craft or dollar store for inspiration and party supplies. From haunted houses and murder mystery themes to football and Friendsgiving, you are sure to find a theme to suit young and old alike.

Depending on where you live, you could host your party outside. Decorate your backyard or patio with lights, fall decor and plants to set the mood. On cooler nights, gather around a fire pit and make s’mores! Or you can head inside for a spooky movie marathon, cards or board games.

Take a fall vacation

Fall is a great time to fit in a last-minute vacation before the holiday season. Check out a bed and breakfast for a home-away-from-home feel. The bed and breakfast operator can act as your local guide and fill you in on the fall events in the area.

If you are looking for something more adventurous, rent a cabin or go camping. Read a good book by the fire, explore hiking or biking trails and enjoy the local cuisine.

Plan a staycation

Sometimes there is nothing better than staying close to home. Some ways to enjoy your local area:

  • Head to a park and have a picnic. Take in the sights and sounds of the changing season.
  • Have a mini fall photo session to capture the changing scenery.
  • Attend fall festivals or fall sporting events.
  • Grab your favorite fall-themed beverage and go to a late-season flea market.
  • Host a chili cook off or fall baking contest.
  • Get crafty. Make an outdoor wreath or yard sign to welcome your guests to your home.
