Some animals are quite large and can cause serious damage to your vehicle if you hit one. But even smaller animals and birds can cause indirect damage if you swerve to miss them.
Of course, animals aren’t good at signaling before they step into or fly across the road, and often they’re hidden until just before you see them.
Here’s what you need to know before – and after – a crash.
Before the Crash (Know Your Coverage)
There are two kinds of physical damage coverage for your automobile: “collision” and “comprehensive”:
- Collision - Collision coverage pays for damage to your car resulting from a collision with another car, object or as a result of flipping over. It also covers damage caused by potholes.
- Comprehensive - Comprehensive coverage pays for damage to your vehicle caused by something other than a collision with another car or object. This could include fire, theft, falling objects, missiles, explosion, earthquake, windstorm, hail, flood, vandalism, riot – or contact with animals such as birds or deer.
Avoid the Crash
- Brake firmly when you notice an animal in or near your path, but stay in your lane. Many serious crashes occur when drivers swerve to avoid an animal and hit another vehicle or lose control of their cars.
- If your vehicle strikes an animal, do not touch it. A frightened and wounded animal can hurt you or further injure itself. The best procedure is to get your car off the road, if possible, and call the police.
- Drive with caution when moving through a crossing zone. If you see one deer, others may be nearby. Deer seldom run alone.
Too Late, Now What?
- Get your vehicle off the road if possible
- Document the incident. Take photographs of the road, the surroundings, damage to your vehicle and any injuries to you or your passengers.
- Check your vehicle carefully. Is it safe to drive? Do you see leaking fluid, loose parts, tire damage, broken lights, or any other safety hazard? When in doubt, don’t drive it. Call for a tow.
